Poronkusema Final Plan: Race is On!

Tomorrow’s RXCSF Poronkusema Pursuit will be held at Bristol Mt Nordic Summit Center. Details are updated at http://www.skireg.com. Bib pick-up from 8-8:45AM and racers start at 9AM. We will be able to use both nordic loops as long as temps cool tonight. The main event will be two loops classic and two loops skate (total of 12K). Novice/U14/U12 will do 1 loop of each (6K) and U10/U8/Lollipop and anyone wanting a really short race will do 1 loop each of Aries (2K). Be aware that Bristol does charge a $10 trail pass fee on top of our registration if you don’t already have a season pass.

T-shirts are in for those who signed up for the series at the start of the year!

Poronkusema is a Go!

We will be holding the race at Bristol. Bib pick- up at 8AM. Race Start at 9AM. Distance between 9 and 12K depending on course conditions. Skiathlon format. See you Sunday morning !

Poronkusema Update, Bad News

Unfortunately Byrncliff is closed today. They hope to re-open soon, but the race is definitely at risk for Sunday. The worst of the weather will be done by tomorrow and we ‘ll reassess options.

Poronkusema Three Update

Conditions are perfect across western New York. We should be on course for the third Poronkusema on Sunday at Byrncliff. There is a warm- up predicted for Weds-Fri so a venue or technique change remains possible. Register at http://www.skireg.com.

New Biathletes Minted!

Congrats to RXCSF athletes Jochen Hoppert and Stina Bridgeman who completed their first winter biathlons this past weekend! Check out New York Biathlon for info on upcoming races. The races are very beginner friendly and do not require any firearms experience. The clubs will provide instruction and a gun for you to use.

World Cup Conditions at RXCSF Poronkusema

Huge kudos to the snow makers and groomers at Bristol Mt. They provided a flawless carpet of the white stuff for the second installment of the RXCSF Poronkusema series.

We had 39-finishers across three races. An amazing 68% of racers had a mother, father, brother, sister, husband, wife, son or daughter racing as well. Nordic is truly a family affair. Racers went from age 7 to 62.

In the main event, 6K, Jason Hettenbaugh repeated his victory from the classic race. Chasing him in was RNR team mate Chad Day. Matt Bellizzi rounded out the podium for RXCSF after overcoming a broken pole midrace and finishing with a pole from a Bill Koch racer.

Kathy Schwenk from Allegany Nordic shot up the first climb and never looked back to take the women’s race. Ellen Mallery (RXCSF) and Leah Valvo fought a tight battle for second and third, respectively.

Excellent races by the Bill Kochers who got their first taste of the confusion of a mass start. In the head up race of kids versus moms, the kids also prevailed.

Full results below. Next Poronkusema is on Feb 23rd at Byrncliff. It will be a continuous pursuit! Race the first half classical, change skis quick as you can, and finish skating. Should be a challenging course and a lot of fun for adult and kids alike!

Poronkusema Start Lists

Tomorrow should be a lot of fun. We have good fields for both the adult novice/youth race (15-racers) as well as the main event (27-racers). We will use two mass starts. The first one (8:30AM) will be the adult novices/youth racers who will ski two loops and the second (about 30-minutes later) will be for the adult race (5-loops). We’ll start on Hale-Bopp. The starting grid will be five across. I used a combo of the first poronkusema as well as NYSSRA races, etc to try to seed everyone as accurately as I could.

Start lists are online at racesplitter.
